Who we are
This website is run by the Africa Centre for Technology Policy and Law (ACTPOL), 10 Douala Street, East Legon, Accra, Ghana. We decide how the personal information described here is used. Write to [email protected] with the subject line “Privacy enquiry” about anything on this page.
In short

- We collect personal information only when you send us a message or subscribe to our emails, and we use it only for that.

- We do not sell or share your information, except with the companies below that run parts of the site for us.
When you send us a message
What we collect: your name, your email address, your organisation if you give it, what your message is about, the message itself, and that you agreed to us keeping these details to reply.
Why: to read and answer your message. Our lawful basis is your consent, which you give with the tick box.
Who processes it: the form sends your message as an email through Resend (Resend, Inc., the United States), which delivers it to our mailbox at Microsoft 365 (Microsoft). Resend keeps a record of the email it sent for a limited time, under its privacy policy.
How long we keep it: in our mailbox for as long as we need it to deal with your message and keep a record of our correspondence, and then we delete it.
When you subscribe to our emails
What we collect: your email address, when you subscribed and whether you have confirmed. We send one email asking you to confirm; nothing else is sent until you do.
Why: to send you an email when we publish and invitations to open convenings. Our lawful basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email.
Who processes it: our list is held by Buttondown (Buttondown, LLC, the United States), which sends the emails for us under its privacy policy. Open and click tracking is switched off, so Buttondown does not record whether you open our emails or which links you follow.
How long we keep it: until you unsubscribe. If you never confirm, you receive nothing further, and you can ask us to delete the address at any time.
Stopping spam
The forms include a hidden field that people never see and spam robots often fill in; messages with it filled in are discarded. To stop floods of messages, the site counts how many times each internet (IP) address has sent a form in the last few minutes; the count is held briefly in memory and not stored.
The contact form may also use Cloudflare Turnstile (Cloudflare, Inc., the United States), which checks that a person is using the browser without showing a puzzle. It looks at technical information about your browser and connection, sets no tracking cookies, and does not use the information for advertising. See its privacy policy.
Counting visits
We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics (Cloudflare, Inc., the United States) to see which pages are read. It uses no cookies or other storage in your browser, does not follow you across other websites and does not identify you. See how it works.
Running the website
The site is served by Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc., the United States). To deliver pages and protect the site from attacks, its servers process your internet (IP) address and technical details of each request, and keep them in short-lived logs under its privacy policy. Our fonts, images and film are served from our own site, so reading a page makes no request to anyone else. The “Share on X” and “Share on LinkedIn” links are plain links: nothing is sent to those services unless you follow them.
Where your information goes
The companies above are based in the United States and may process information outside Ghana. We use them only on terms that require them to protect it and to use it only to provide their service to us.
Your rights
Under the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843), you have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to or withdraw consent for its use. Write to [email protected] and we will reply within two working days. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Data Protection Commission of Ghana.
Changes to this notice
If we change what we collect or who processes it, we will update this page and the date at the top.
